Your Topper Just Killed Your Digital Rearview Mirror. Here's the Fix.

You spec'd out the truck carefully. Maybe you optioned the digital rearview mirror because you haul stuff and wanted a clean sightline past whatever's in the bed. Then you went and did the thing you bought the truck to do — added a topper, a camper shell, a bed rack with a rooftop tent — and now that high-res mirror shows you nothing but canvas, fiberglass, or darkness.

The digital rearview camera and your backup/infotainment camera are two entirely separate systems. Your backup camera lives in the tailgate and will continue to function normally. What's affected is only the DRV camera at the cab roofline — and on some setups, the cargo/bed view camera too.

The Fix: Relocate the Camera

The solution is to extend the camera's wiring and physically move it to a position where it can still see behind the truck. Depending on your setup, that means either mounting it to the interior glass of your topper (no-drill) or enclosing it in a weatherproof housing and mounting it to the exterior of your rig on a T-slot rail.

The OEM cable isn't long enough to reach these new positions — that's the core problem. You need a proper shielded extension cable that preserves signal integrity over the longer run, plus the right mounting hardware for where you're putting the camera.

The Install

Both kits route new wiring through the C-pillar and out a grommet under the rear seat — you're not cutting any OEM wiring. You're extending it. The biggest part of the job is pulling the headliner and some interior panels to run the cable cleanly. Plan for a few hours the first time. People who've done it report it takes closer to three hours if they know what they're doing going in. The instructions are specific to the Tacoma and Tundra platforms — this isn't a generic camera extension kit that you have to adapt.
